Welcome to Maine Coast Lavender

In 2018 we started a small family farm -- Fog Dog Farm -- in the coastal community of Waldoboro, Maine, a small welcoming town rich in seafaring and agricultural traditions that has, for now, escaped the tourist onslaught of surrounding coastal villages.

Our sunny southeast facing slope

On a few acres we planted raspberries, blackberries, and fraser fir xmass trees, and also began our journey of building a Maine lavender farm. Growing every plant from seed on a warm southeast facing slope, we now have about 400 plants, and add about 50 new ones each year. Our primary english lavender varieties are Vera, Munstead, and recently, Elegance Purple.
.

We start the seedlings in our kitchen in January and plant outside in May. While some plants flower in their first year, we typically have our first harvest in year two, right after July 4th.  Flower stems are cut, bundled, and hung in the barn rafters for at least three weeks to dry. We then fashion wreaths of various sizes, dried bundles, and jars of potpourri.

It's all a labor of love. Everything is done by hand using the most natural (or reusable) materials (no pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers) and techniques we can access. Ultimately, this isn't Provence, it's Maine, so we invariably have some crop loss each winter--in bad winters some heart-breaking losses.

But growing lavender here in Maine, just down the road from the sea, and spending our days in a place that smells of lavender, is indeed paradise.

Even our aching backs and callused hands would agree.
